decorating for modern living

Redecorating your home or apartment is a way to bring out your natural creative self. The problem that most people face is that they like a piece individually but not knowing how to group things together unless it comes in a package for them.

It is always helpful to get a plan together before you take on your new design project.

Before you shop, calculate the important measurements and prepare a checklist of all essential items. Putting together a diagram of the room is a good place to start. This will ensure you do not order or purchase items that are too large or too small.

Prior to any making any purchases, think about what design theme you would like to carry out. If you are planning on designing over multiple rooms, it is important to keep the same idea throughout. It helps to view current decorating trends before you make your selections. Always make sure that you choose classic pieces and neutral colors for bigger items like your sofa, and bedroom furniture. This way when you are ready to make another change, or you are one that likes to changes seasonal, you have a clean canvas to work with. Switching out pillows and bedding is more cost friendly.

Use paint and wallpaper that is neutral as well. Neutral does not always mean boring beige. Metallic wallpaper is a great way to make a room modern and fit with anything. Colors like olive and warm grays are going to be around for a while. Get rid of the red wall! This has been done and nowadays we are looking at a softer touch.

If you want to be bold thinks use accent pieces to make your room stand out. Instead of art work, there are many stores that carry modern looking shapes that create dimension and interest. Instead of painting a wall with an accent color, try wallpaper instead. It will make a wall appear to have more texture and could even be cheaper than an expensive piece of art.

Window treatments are a lot like buying a sofa. They are expensive and should stay neutral. Get rid of those heavy fabrics with tons of draping and pleats. Semi-sheer are in and let light in, it’s a win-win situation.

When choosing accessories there are a couple of must haves: A throw for the arm of your couch (stylish and functional), Metallic accessories – candlesticks, sculptures, picture frames, even vases for your flowers, Rich woods for your mirrors or accent tables, clean and modern.

Blend prints and fabrics for your accent pillow and chairs. Texture is a must in every modern home. Make sure they blend together by having something in common such as color or complementing colors.

Adding indoor plants is an absolute must. Greenery keeps you healthier and happier, while making a room feel cozy.

Remember keep things in common. Just because you like a piece of décor does not mean it must be used. A room usually goes off track because you fall in love with one item and veer from the original plan making a room look like it was styled by more than a few people that couldn’t quite agree.

Of course, do not become too obsessed about this process but put enough time. In the end as long as your room(s) are an expression of you, there will be satisfaction. If you become loss in the process, you might want to try a professional or a friend whose style you like.
